Election expenses

Under the Act, an election expense is the cost of all goods or services used during the election period to notably promote or oppose directly or indirectly the election of a candidate or that of the candidates of a party.

An election expense:

The Chief Electoral Officer reimburses 50% of the election expenses incurred and paid in accordance with the Act:

The reimbursable election expenses cannot exceed the limit on election expenses set by the Act. Moreover, in the case of an independent candidate who was not elected, the reimbursement cannot exceed the sum of the amount of the debts resulting from the candidates's election expenses and the amount of the candidate's personal contribution.

Upon reception of the results of voting, the candidates eligible for a reimbursement can benefit from an advance on the reimbursement equal to 35% of the limit on election expenses set by the Act. For parties, the advance is paid solely upon the acceptance, by the Chief Electoral Officer, of an attestation of the estimated amount of the election expenses incurred. This attestation is sent by the official agent of the party.

The reimbursement of election expenses and the advance on the reimbursement are paid by cheque or by transfer of funds to an account held by the official representative.
